When a woman (Phoebe Cates) quickly loses her job, car and husband, she returns home only to be confronted by Fred (Rik Mayall), an imaginary childhood friend. He shakes her out of herself with his outlandish behaviour, and she soon finds herself tough enough to set about getting her life back.
