Set in Johannesburg in 1963, A World Apart is based on screenwriter Shawn Slovo's own parents' lives as ANC activists.

It tells the story of a frantic, politicised mother (Barbara Hershey), and her relationship with her young daughter (Jodhi May). The film is driven by the tension between the daughter's resentment at what she perceives to be her mother's neglect of the family, and her gradual acknowledgement of the importance of the political imperatives by which her mother is compelled.

A World Apart also received the Grand Prix at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.
